What is shared purpose and why does it matter?

Shared Purpose, put simply, is the idea that people within your organisation are all aligned to the same mission. Where there is shared purpose, there is drive, alignment, and a collective sense of belonging. It results in happier and more motivated employees, which in turn drives high performance.

However small or large an individual’s role is within a company, the individual needs to understand how they are contributing to the larger story within an organisation. Finding meaning and creating a sense of shared purpose is essential in unlocking performance and goal achievement.

In larger organisations (especially) it can be difficult to see how an individual goal or objective are connected to those of others, and how they relate to the bigger picture. If an individual cannot see how what they are doing is impacting the wider company goals, and it does not motivate them at an individual level, there is less ownership of the goal and the likelihood of hitting it is decreased.

Organisations that prioritise environments where individuals feel like they have a strong connection to their work, strong connections to their teams, feel like they are making meaningful contributions, and have numerous training and development opportunities, are organisations that significantly increase the probability of delivering positive and desired outcomes.

Individuals are diverse and unique in what motivates them, their personalities, their strengths, and their aspirations. Understanding these factors is key to understanding your employees’ and leading them to feel fulfilled in their roles.

“We are our values, beliefs and behaviours. Our moral principles or accepted standards which guide our thoughts, feelings and ultimately our actions, and if you ask your people to take actions ALIGNED with their values and beliefs, they will do it every single day of the week.”

– Royston Guest

Shared purpose, and alignment to this shared purpose leads to:

  • Happier and more motivated employees
  • Increased collaboration within teams and departments
  • Increased probability of delivering outcomes
  • A stronger more positive workplace culture
  • Role fulfillment
  • Increased probability of individual and team goal achievement
  • Improved employee retention

We touch on this topic in greater detail in our recent Performance series webinar: Goal Alignment. We highly recommend watching, with speakers Christian Hughes (our CEO), Wendy Kilgannon (our UK Sales Manager) and guest speaker, Nelson Derry (Culture and Inclusion Leader, and Author).
